From what I understand of the Maori culture the women step forward, symbolizing the Maori putting their best face forward and they welcome you. However if your intentions are less than honorable the men will "take you down so to speak" Sticking the tongue out I believe means "We will eat you" in their culture. The warriors dance the haka to show their strength and intimidation. Thats the best I can remember really.

The way I was told, the haka was designed to psyche out the raiding war party. It was done to AVOID bloodshed, which is something thats gone unnoticed by a lot of history writers. The haka was also very practical in that it amped up the defending warriors so that IF the other tribe didnt back down and run the other way, at least the warriors were all ready to defend their turf. Very practical people the old time Maori.
